Sermon: I Am Doing A New Thing

God is doing a "new thing" in our lives. We can leave behind the former things and move onto to what God has in store for us.

Today the new thing that God is doing in our lives is bringing the promises made through God's covenant with Abraham 1000s of years ago, into our lives so that we may experience the blessings of hope and promise that were given then for you and me today.

The same God that Isaiah served, the same God that guided and inspired Isaiah, the Redeemer of Israel, is also our God today.

  • God is seperated from us by Gods holiness yet ever with us, active by Gods great power & Holy Spirit and is interested in prospering our lives.
  • God calls us individually to be Gods people and to find security and hope in a God who can bring water into a dry land, not in our own human schemes.
  • God is first no matter where we choose to put God in our lives. God will do amazing, new things in the lives of those who put God first.
  • Temptation is always there for us to make our own gods and bow down to them.
  • We can forget the former things because God is doing a new thing in our lives today just as God did in Isaiahs day.

So far we have looked at the following in this series:

We looked at some background to the the context of book of Isaiah: summarised Isaiah's life and the setting of the book, to get a hold of the context of our Lord God Whose promises are unfailing and still stand, regardless of our failings.

The first major point we looked at is:

  1. Forgetting the former things

    Isaiah 43:18-19:
18 Forget the former things, do not dwell on the past.
19 See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the desert and streams in the wasteland.

We are told to forget the former things.  That is our former way of living before knowing God -- the things that held us bound and captive to sin.
We are to forget the former things and remember the new things that come from God.

Isaiah 43:18 means to seperate mentally those things that cause you grief -- do not dwell on them.

You are not caught in a trap!  Things are not the same as they once were when you were living in your old ways!

We can forget the former things because God has started a new work in our lives.

Phil 1:6 God who has started a new work in you WILL carry it through to completion.

The old has gone and the new has come, says the Word.

2 Cor.5:17 Therefore if anyone is in Christ they are a NEW creation; the old has gone the new has come.

I said to you that God wants to do a new work - a new thing - in our lives, but sometimes we cant see it because we let the former things get in the way of what God is showing us.

We've looked at 5 things that keep us from seeing the new thing that God wants to show us and do in our lives.

The first thing that keeps us from seeing the new work God wants to do in our lives is:

1.1 When our eyes are behind us or in another place

When our eyes are looking at our past it takes our eyes off our future in Chirst. Our eyes cannot see because they are turned in the wrong direction.  Look what happened to Lot's wife!

2 Cor.5:17 Therefore if anyone is in Christ they are a NEW creation; the old has gone the new has come.

    1.2 We want both

The second reason we dont see the new thing God is doing is that we hold onto the former things and want the new things at the same time. We don't like letting go of old stuff! We become spiritual horders of old fleshly things that keep us from wholeness in Christ.

Matthew 9:17 People dont pour new wine into old wineskins. If they do, the skins will burst the wine will run out and the wineskins will be ruined. No, they pour new wine into new wineskins

We can't keep the old wine skins and have the new wine; it doesnt work that way.  We can't serve God and the world at the same time, for God does not dwell in darkness, which is the old flesh. We can't have both. God has started a NEW WORK!

When we hold onto the old things, but still try to live in Christ, we sacrifice the very joy, love and peace that leads us to wholeness in Christ.  We lose out on the mega-blessings that God wants to pour out onto us. The new wine is the replenishment that comes through the Holy Spirit, which changes and transforms us.

When we hold onto to the old wineskins, there is no room for the new wine. We must be willing to submit in every area where God wants to work with us, so that we have a spirit that can support the new wine.

We dont realize how the former things can affect our future things when we dont let go of them! I cant expect to grow into wholeness and the fullness of Christ if I am not prepared to let go of the old.

Luke 22:20 This is the cup of the NEW covenant, in my blood, which is poured out for you.

So often we hold onto the old things, the former things, the bad things.  Instead, we do not look forward to what God is showing us.

    Eph 4:17-24
17 So I tell you this, and insist on it in the Lord, that you must no longer live as the Gentiles to, in the futility of their thinking.
18 They are darkened in their understanding and separated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them due to the hardening of their hearts.
19 Having lost all sensitivity they have given themselves over to sensuality so as to indulge in every kind of impurity, with a continual lust for more.
20 You, however, did not come to know Christ that way.
21 Surely you heard of Him and were taught in Him in accordance with the truth that is in Jesus.
    22 You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires;
    23 To be made new in the attitude of your minds;
23 And to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.

1.3 We don't want to hear God.

The third thing that keeps us from from forgetting the former things is that we have selective hearing.  I don't want to hear about what I have to give up, so I make excuses about why I can't let go.  If I am not listening to God, who am I listening to?

Dr. John Maxwell says, "It is easier to go from failure to success than excuses to success. We must initiate by listening.

1.4 Focusing on what I don't have is envy.

When we are so busy focusing on what we don't have and worrying about ourselves, we can't even see what God is giving us, as it takes our eyes off the new work God is doing.

1.5 Don't beat yourself up about your past.

The last reason that I cannot see the new thing God is busy doing is that Im too busy beating myself about the former things!

We do it with our eyes closed.  Guilt and shame belong in the pit!  Jesus Christ has paid the price for you.  The blood of Jesus Christ's new covenant has set you free from your past, regardless of whether or not you are to blame!

IT IS FINISHED is what Christ said on the cross!

There is a quote that says, "When satan reminds you of your past, remind him of his future!"

We miss the boat because our attention is drawn to earthly things and away from God.  I must forget the things of the past in order to be able to see the things of my future.

May God bless & Keep you
